Introduction to Backpacking Tips for Beginners
My journey to Backpack travel
Discovering the world, feeling freedom, and satisfying the thirst for adventure – these are the core ideas of backpack travel. For me, this journey began a few years ago when I took my first two long-distance trips to the USA (2017) and Thailand (2018).
The road trip through the US with a conventional suitcase went relatively smoothly. However, when I went island hopping in Thailand, I realized that carrying a suitcase on unpaved roads and constant changes of location was not only exhausting but also nerve-wracking.
As a result, I decided to switch to a 80 liter backpack for my Sri Lanka vacation in 2019 and experience the adventures of backpacking for the first time. This transition to lighter and more convenient luggage significantly impacted my travel experience.
In the following years, I only went on short trips within Europe with a 30-liter carry-on backpack, explored Costa Rica (2021) and other parts of Asia (2022) again with my 70-liter backpack.
Finally, at the end of 2022, during our trip to Mexico, Panama, and Colombia, I switched to a compact 40-liter backpack and started to travel the world with carry-on only.

Why Backpacking and What to Consider?
Backpacking has evolved into a fascinating way of traveling that more and more people choose for their travel adventures. It not only offers the opportunity to explore the world but also a unique feeling of freedom and flexibility.
The decision to travel with light luggage not only changed my travel style but also my personal perspective on experiencing new cultures and adventures.
The fascination and advantages of backpacking
Backpacking allows for a more authentic travel experience, away from the usual tourist paths. By carrying luggage on your back, you are more flexible and can react spontaneously to changes. The contact with the local population becomes more intense, and you dive deeper into the culture of the visited country.
The obvious advantage of backpacking is the reduced stress and increased mobility. Abandoning heavy suitcases also means the end of endless queues at baggage claim and eliminates the constant fear of lost luggage. Backpacking also opens up new horizons that often remain undiscovered in conventional travel.
My personal development
The decision to switch to backpacking was a gradual process. After my first two long-distance trips, I could have changed my general way of traveling and switched to luxurious travel, for example. However, my thirst for adventure drove me, and as a poor student, I didn’t have much choice.
This decision not only led to a more relaxed way of traveling but also to unique experiences and encounters. Reducing luggage not only means less physical burden but also a liberation from the constraints of conventional travel methods.
Since the end of 2022, I have even switched to a 40-liter carry-on backpack for long-distance trips, demonstrating that backpacking is not just a travel method but a lifestyle that can profoundly influence the way we see the world.

Traveling with Carry-on Only and its Benefits
After my first experiences with backpacking, I couldn’t ignore the advantages of this way of traveling. The freedom, flexibility, and possibility of exploring the world with minimal luggage became a lifestyle that I cherish since then. My first two long-distance trips took me to the US and Thailand.
While a road trip in the US with a suitcase was still manageable, I quickly realized during island hopping in Thailand that carrying heavy luggage was becoming a burden. This realization was the trigger for my decision to switch to a 70-liter backpack during our Sri Lanka tour.
In the following years, I first went on short trips around Europe with a 30-liter carry-on backpack, then with the 70-liter backpack to Asia and Costa Rica. Since the end of 2022, I have even switched to a 40-liter carry-on backpack for long-distance trips.
Why only carry-on luggage?
This decision was based on the desire to maximize the benefits of minimalist travel. Saving costs for checked luggage, saving nerves, and reducing weight make every trip much more enjoyable. At first, I never thought it was possible to travel for months with only hand luggage, but the experience convinced me.
Traveling with light luggage not only offers practical advantages but also changes the way I experience new places. The flexibility to be spontaneous and to be guided by intuition leads to more authentic experiences.
The ease of travel opens up the opportunity to meet amazing people and create unforgettable memories. Let the benefits of minimalist travel encourage and motivate you to try it out for yourself. Whether you’re planning a world tour or a short vacation, choosing light luggage can profoundly change your travel experience.

Backpacking Tips for Beginners – How to Start Backpacking?
Starting your backpacking journey may seem overwhelming at first, but with the right tips and approach, it can be an exciting adventure. Here are some pieces of advice for backpacking beginners:
Choosing your travel destinations and budget
Before packing your backpack, decide what kind of travel experience you want. Do you want to get lost in bustling cities, explore remote natural paradises, or have a mix of both? Determining your destinations will help you plan your route and choose the necessary equipment.
Further, a realistic budget is crucial for the success of your trip. Consider all expenses, including flight tickets, accommodations, food, activities, and necessary equipment. Plan for unexpected costs. Your budget will also determine how long you can travel and what kind of accommodations and activities you can afford.
Choosing the right backpack
When choosing a backpack, it is essential to find the right size. A too-large backpack can be overloaded and unwieldy, while a too-small one may not have enough space for the necessary items.
Based on my own experience, I recommend a backpack with a capacity of 40 (carry-on) to 60 liters (checked luggage). This provides enough space for essentials without making the backpack unnecessarily heavy.
Examples for such backpacks can be found here:
Lightweight and versatile equipment
When packing, less is often more. Choose versatile clothing that is easy to combine and made of lightweight material. Avoid unnecessary gadgets and focus on the essentials. Remember that you will likely buy things during the trip, so plan enough room for souvenirs.
Carefully choose which items you really need. Toothbrush, comb, sunglasses, and other personal items should fit in your backpack. Invest in travel utensils that are lightweight, compact, and multifunctional.
Tip: Try to bring only one charger for your electronics and work with adapters in case of emergency.
Efficient packing and organizing
Use every inch of your backpack sensibly. Roll clothes instead of folding them to save space. Use packing cubes to organize your stuff and find them more quickly. Compression packing systems are also helpful to save space and keep your luggage organized.
Technology for travel
Modern technology can make traveling easier. A phone with a good camera is often enough to capture memories. Consider whether additional gadgets such as a GoPro or drone are necessary. Apps like Notion can be helpful in organizing accommodations, flights, and activities and save you unnecessary space to print hotel, flight, or other confirmations.
Get a travel first aid kit
A well-equipped travel first aid kit should be an essential part of your luggage. In addition to basic medications, remember painkillers, insect bite ointment, high SPF sunscreen, and travel sickness tablets if necessary. When traveling to countries with a high risk of malaria, taking malaria prophylaxis is also advisable.
Entering the world of backpacking requires some planning, but with the right equipment and smart preparation, your first trip will be an unforgettable experience.
In the next section, I will discuss the next steps you can take before and during your backpacking trip to make the most of your adventure.

Backpacking Tips and Tricks for Beginners
After choosing your travel destinations, planning your budget, and buying your first backpack, it’s time to prepare for the actual backpacking. Here are some practical backpacking tips and tricks to make your experience as smooth as possible:
Must-have items for backpackers
Choosing the right gear is crucial for a successful backpacking adventure. In this section, we’ll take a look at some essential items that will make your travel easier and help you save space:
• Microfiber towels → dry quickly and save space
• Foldable daypack
• Foldable water bottle
• Solid soap, deodorant, and shampoo
• Anti-mosquito soap
• Foldable rain jacket
• Portable clothesline (if you wash clothes yourself)
Make a packing list
Create a detailed packing list tailored to your travel destinations, activities, and personal needs. Consider clothing, travel utensils, technology, medication, and documents. Careful preparation not only makes packing easier but also prevents you from forgetting important things.
Keep your travel documents safe
Keep your travel documents, such as your passport, visa, and flight tickets, safe in a waterproof bag. Make copies and store them digitally to access them in case of an emergency.
How to organize your laundry on the go
Consider how to organize your laundry on the go. Many accommodations offer laundry facilities, and using travel laundry detergents can be helpful. Plan ahead, especially in countries with high laundry costs such as in Colombia.
Always keep safety in mind
Keep an eye on your valuables. Use a money belt or a hard-to-reach wallet. Lock your backpack in accommodations to prevent theft and store it elevated so that no insects or other animals can get in.
With these practical tips, you’re well prepared for your backpacking adventure. In the next section, I’ll discuss the challenges that may arise while traveling and provide further advice to help you travel flexibly and stress-free.

Backpacking Countries for Beginners
The costs of backpacking can vary greatly depending on the region, chosen lifestyle, and personal decisions. Here are some regions that are generally considered affordable destinations for backpacking:
Asia: India, Oman, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos
South and Central America: Guatemala, Colombia, Nicaragua, Bolivia, and Ecuador
Eastern Europe: Albania, Romania, Montenegro, Bosnia, Hungary, and Czech Republic
North Africa: Morocco, Egypt, Tanzania and several other African countries
In general, I think most countries in the world are suitable for backpacking. There are always ways to find afforable stays anywhere, but I will focus on this topic in another article soon.
However, when it comes to the question about easy countries to travel with your backpack I would absolutely suggest Malaysia! Malaysia is a country that feels more Western than other South East Asian countries, you can get along with English very well and it is super cheap.
We have been backpacking around Malaysia in January 2024 for 3 weeks and absolutely fell in love with the country. Don’t miss to visit places like Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Putrajaya and Langkawi.

Sustainable travel
More and more backpackers value sustainable travel. Conscious use of resources, eco-friendly accommodations, and supporting local communities are central aspects. Sustainable backpacking is becoming a significant force for positive change.
Working remote while traveling
The ability to work from anywhere in the world has led to more backpackers packing their offices in their backpacks. Remote work allows for longer stays in one place, deeper immersion in local cultures, while staying professionally active.
Health conciousness
Global health concerns, especially related to pandemics, have led to increased health consciousness among backpackers. Hygiene measures, health precautions, and flexible travel plans are now integral parts of the backpacking experience.
Off-the-beaten-path destinations
While classic backpacking routes are still popular, many travelers are looking for authentic and off-the-beaten-path destinations. The desire to discover unique and less crowded places drives backpackers to deviate from the well-trodden paths.
Cultural exchanges
There is an increasing focus on cultural exchange and building communities among backpackers. Local experiences, meeting new people, and sharing stories become central elements of the backpacking experience.
Diversity and inclusion
A growing diversity of travelers shapes the backpacking scene. Diversity and inclusion are gaining importance, and travel companies and communities are working towards creating an open and supportive environment for all backpackers.
